The majority of floors were constructed of wood planks from 8" to 18" wide, because narrow boards were expensive to prepare in a pre-industrial era and therefore reserved for the best rooms. Though many wood floors were meant to be unfinished, care was also a practical concern and these boards were often painted to ease cleanup and protect the wood. But chances are that if the house is that old, the floors have been painted and repainted over the course of the years and some sanding will be required. If you're intent on stripping them, I would get some chemical stripper and do a test piece in a closet or someplace out of view to decide whether it's worth the trouble. The other approach is to bite the bullet and call in a floor sander and have him sand the whole thing down to bare wood and refinish it.
